The Very Busy Cohen Milstein
For Washington-based Cohen Milstein Hausfeld & Toll, the last few months have been ones for the record books. The firm has been exceptionally busy with new growth, starting in June with the opening of its London office. Cohen Milstein says it is the first U.S. plaintiffs’ class action firm to set up shop in the European Union. That office is headed by Rob Murray, who was a reporting panel member for the UK Competition Commission before becoming the London managing partner.
In a recent article from UK publication The Lawyer, another London-based Cohen Milstein partner, Anthony Maton, said he anticipates that other American firms will also branch out into Europe to acquire similar work. He added, “UK firm success on the defense side would depend ironically almost entirely on what we as claimant lawyers do. The number of large firms that have announced the formation of defense groups cannot do anything without firms such as ourselves successfully bringing collective actions.”
Cohen Milstein also opened a San Francisco office in August, headed by business litigator Michael Lehmann. He joined from Furth Lehmann, where he was managing (and name) partner. And in July, the firm’s Chicago office changed to a new location in the Second City, and new recruit Carol Gilden signed on as managing partner there. The New York office also found new leadership in recently appointed managing partner Robert Eisler.
In a press release, firmwide managing partner Steven Toll said, “Our work is expanding in coordination with the globalization of the legal marketplace, as additional lawyers are needed to provide relief to those affected worldwide by corporate misconduct.”
