Yet Another DOJ Official Departs

Regina Schofield, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs, is leaving the Department of Justice Sept. 28. Her plans for the near future were not released.

She is one of more than a dozen high-ranking Justice officials who have called it quits this year. Most left under a cloud of suspicion related to the controversial firing of nine U.S. attorneys, but others -- like Schofield -- are leaving for other reasons.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, in a news release, said Schofield "has served the Department of Justice and the American people with distinction and honor" and "made significant contributions to public safety and criminal justice during her tenure.”

The department's statement also said the Office of Justice Programs, under Schofield, "helped protect children from online predators, produced groundbreaking statistics and research on crime-related matters, advanced law enforcement information sharing, helped crime victims, and watched new successes in Weed and Seed communities across the country working to make neighborhoods safe."

In addition,  she played a crucial role "as the national Amber Alert Coordinator, in which role she encouraged and facilitated the creation and strengthening of regional, state, and local plans to aid in recovering abducted children." Schofield also led the office through other major initiatives, including Project Safe Neighborhoods, Project Safe Childhood, the President’s DNA initiative, the Prisoner Reentry Initiative, and Helping America’s Youth. With her departure more scrutiny has been applied to reveal that she does not have a law degree. Let the Shrub in the Oval Office explain how a non-lawyer can be an assistant Attorney General?
