In With the New: Sources within the White House say Pres. Bush has landed on retired federal judge Michael Mukasey to replace Alberto Gonzales as attorney general. Bush could announce his selection as early as this morning, the WaPo says. Mukasey is considered a compromise: he is conservative, and considered an authority on national security, yet he has been praised by Senate Democrats.
The Juice: O.J. Simpson is in a Las Vegas jail this morning. He is held without bond at the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit burglary, and burglary with a firearm, reports the L.A. Times. Simpson’s trouble stems from an alleged robbery of a Las Vegas hotel of what he claims was sports memorabilia stolen from him.
Antitrust Bust: The second-highest European court upheld a $689.4 million fine against Microsoft today for abusing its dominance of the computer operating systems industry, says the NYT. Black Boxes: The two flight data recorders, known as black boxes, of the plane that crashed in Thailand Sunday, were recovered today, the NYT reports. Not Quite Mob Rule: The HBO drama, “The Sopranos” took home the statue for best dramatic series at the Emmy Awards last night, the AP reports. But the hit mob show, which recently had its series finale, did not win quite as big as was anticipated. Its lead actors James Gandolfini and Edie Falco lost to James Spader of “Boston Legal” and Sally Field of “Brothers and Sisters.” When accepting her award, Field included an anti-war sentiment- “If the mothers ruled the war, there would be no (expletitve) wars in the first place”- causing censors to momentarily cut away from the show.
