Pfizer's request that a Nigerian court in Abuja throw out a lawsuit seeking $7 billion in damages got a red light from Nigerian officials, according to the Associated Press. The Nigerian government claims in this suit that the U.S. pharmaceutical company conducted an unauthorized drug experiment in 1996 on about 200 children with meningitis that allegedly lead to their deaths or serious disabilities.
The civil case in Abuja, according to the Associated Press, is one of two lawsuits against the company stemming from the 1996 experiment. The other lawsuit is in the northern state of Kano. Pfizer has denied any wrongdoing.
