Last week, we blogged about the possibility of US firms positioning themselves to handle a potential onslaught of class-action style lawsuits in Europe. We noted that D.C.-based plaintiffs firm Cohen Milstein opened its long-awaited London shop with two new hires. We also linked to a story from Legal Week about Skadden Arps launching a U.K.-based class action defense practice to be headed by D.C. Litigation partner Andrew Sandler. Turns out the Legal Week story was overblown. Sandler told the BLT that while Skadden is "carefully monitoring" the development of class-action litigation in Europe that the firm hasn't launched any such practice group. Sandler's not relocating to the U.K. either, so London real estate brokers you can stop calling.

As the editor of Legal Week, I’ll respond to the above. We checked with Andrew Sandler at Skadden after reading this blog and he indicated that our piece was accurate and that the firm had been correctly quoted. The claim that the piece is “overblown” is editorializing by the blogger and not, at least according to what the firm has since told us, the opinion of Skadden. We have also since spoken to the Skadden lawyer directly quoted, Paul Mitchard, and he has given no indication of being unhappy with the piece. As to Mr Sandler moving to Europe, our article makes no such claim so I have no idea what the reference to London real estate is about. Anyone who wants to check out what our article actually said or keep up to date with class action developments in Europe should go to www.legalweek.com.
