Morning Wrap

Blt_270I Don’t Recall. Can’t we just agree to disagree? Um. No. The public flogging Attorney General Alberto Gonzales endured yesterday was not for those with weak stomachs. NYT and WaPo lead with the story, while the L.A. Times breaks down reaction from U.S. Senators.

Tea Party time. The House of Representatives passed a bill that would give Washington, D.C. its first voting seat in Congress. But the District's victory might be short-lived because there don't appear to be enough votes in the Senate to overcome a filibuster. Oh, plus President Bush has threatened to veto the bill. So that’s nice.

More bad news. While recruitment numbers for the army are down, so too is the staffing walk-in clinics run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. But the number of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan that visit these clinics has doubled since 2004. Which means there’s a problem.

Roe/Wade.The NYT also pushes the abortion debate, reporting states will look hard at new laws following SCOTUS’ ruling earlier this week.

When the lights go out in the city ... If you too were emotionally bereft during the 10-hour BlackBerry blackout, then it might be time for a Xanax. Or, you could just read this piece and commiserate with other wireless email addicts.

Knock. Knock. Another day, another congressional raid of a sitting congressman who’s can’t wait to help the Feds get to the truth. This time it was Arizona Rep. Rick Renzi (R), who stepped down temporarily from the House Intelligence Committee. Money Quote:

The Justice Department has been investigating Renzi for months, but the subject of the probe has never been made public. Media reports last fall gave conflicting versions, with authorities said to be looking into either a land swap involving a former business partner of Renzi's or a Pentagon contract involving Renzi's father, a retired Army general.
