It looks like Scott Doyle, Seth Watkins and Daniel Girdwood, lawyers in Steptoe & Johnson's technology department, might have some long nights ahead of them. The trio are representing Internet telephone provider Vonage. The company announced today that it would appeal a jury verdict ordering it to pay $58 million and monthly royalties to Verizon Communications Inc. for violating three of its patents. Immediately, following the verdict in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, which came following only a day of deliberations, Verizon's lawyers asked for an injunction banning Vonage from using the technology. Vonage said in a statement that the court battle won't affect its customers and that if an injunction were granted it would immediately seek a stay from a federal appeals court. Verizon is being represented by lawyers in McGuire Woods' Richmond office.
